How to Adjust Holster Retention Screws Safely
A holster that is too loose can make you second-guess every bend, sit, and step. One that is too tight can turn a clean draw into an unnecessary tug-of-war. Learning to adjust holster retention screws gives you a practical way to find the middle ground: your unloaded firearm stays securely in place during normal movement, but comes free with a smooth, deliberate draw.
This adjustment matters most with molded Boltaron® and Kydex-style holsters that use screws and rubber spacers to create adjustable pressure around the trigger guard or frame. It is not a one-setting-for-everyone proposition. Your firearm, carry position, belt, clothing, body movement, and personal preference all affect what “right” feels like.
Start Safe Before You Touch the Screws
Treat a retention adjustment like any other piece of carry gear maintenance: clear the firearm first. Point it in a safe direction, remove the magazine, open the action, and visually and physically confirm that the chamber is empty. Keep all live ammunition away from the work area while you work and test the holster.
Next, identify whether your holster is actually designed for screw-adjustable retention. Many leather holsters use molded fit, a retention strap, or proprietary retention features instead. Some hybrid holsters also use retention hardware, but the screw location and adjustment range can vary. Check the product instructions before making changes, especially if your holster has more than one set of screws.
Use the correct driver for the hardware. Most holster screws accept a Phillips, flathead, Allen, or Torx driver, depending on the model. A driver that does not fit properly can strip a screw head fast. Work on a clean table or counter, ideally with a towel beneath the holster to keep small hardware from rolling away.
How to Adjust Holster Retention Screws
Look for the screws nearest the trigger guard or along the molded body of the holster. These commonly work with rubber spacers or washers. Tightening the screws compresses the spacers and increases the pressure holding the firearm. Loosening them reduces that pressure.
Make small changes. Start with no more than a quarter-turn on each retention screw, keeping paired screws as even as possible. After each adjustment, fully seat the unloaded firearm in the holster. You should feel it settle into place without needing to force it. Draw it with your normal firing-hand grip, keeping the trigger finger straight and outside the trigger guard. The firearm should release cleanly without requiring a sharp yank or pulling the holster up with it.
If the draw feels gritty, uneven, or unusually difficult, back the screws off slightly and test again. If the firearm shifts around, lifts out too easily, or lacks a reassuring hold while moving, tighten in another small, equal increment.
Find the Secure, Usable Middle Ground
The goal is not maximum pressure. The goal is usable retention.
A properly adjusted holster should retain an unloaded firearm through everyday motion without forcing you to fight the draw. Think about the movements that actually happen in your day: getting into the car, picking up a child, reaching for a shelf, tying a shoe, or sitting through a long meeting. Retention should provide confidence in those moments while still supporting a consistent drawstroke.
A good basic test is to holster the unloaded firearm, hold the holster securely, and gently turn it upside down over a padded surface. The firearm should remain seated. This is only a baseline test, not a substitute for checking the holster during normal wear. Do not shake the holster aggressively or use retention testing as an excuse to handle a firearm carelessly.
Then put the empty holster and unloaded firearm on your usual belt. Walk, sit, stand, bend, and move through a few ordinary motions. Pay attention to both security and comfort. A holster can feel perfect on a workbench but become too tight once belt pressure and body movement come into play.
What Too Tight and Too Loose Feel Like
Too-tight retention often announces itself quickly. You may need to pull harder than expected, the holster may ride up with the firearm, or your draw may feel inconsistent. Excessive pressure can also add unnecessary wear to the holster and firearm finish over time. More retention is not automatically better if it slows a controlled, repeatable draw.
Too-loose retention is just as clear. The firearm may rattle noticeably, feel unseated when you move, or come free with very little resistance. A little movement or sound does not always mean failure - especially with certain firearm and holster designs - but a carry holster should not leave you wondering whether the firearm will stay put during normal activity.
There is also a difference between retention and concealment. Tightening screws may reduce movement inside the holster, but it will not necessarily solve printing, discomfort, or an unstable holster position. Those issues may come from belt quality, ride height, cant, clip placement, wardrobe choices, or simply using a carry style that does not fit your routine.
Adjust for Your Actual Carry Setup
Retention is affected by more than the holster shell. A sturdy, purpose-built belt supports the holster and helps keep its position consistent. A soft or sagging belt can make even well-adjusted retention feel unpredictable because the holster shifts when you move or draw.
Your firearm configuration matters, too. A holster must be made for the specific firearm, and any optic, weapon-mounted light, threaded barrel, or other accessory needs to match the holster’s stated fitment. Do not try to solve a fitment mismatch by cranking down retention screws. If the firearm does not seat correctly, binds in the draw, or leaves the trigger guard insufficiently covered, stop using that holster and choose a model built for your setup.
Carry position changes the feel as well. Appendix carry may put more pressure on the holster from your body and belt, while strong-side carry can feel different when seated in a vehicle. If you regularly switch positions, test your adjustment in each one. You may find a balanced setting that works across the board, or you may prefer dedicated holsters optimized for different uses.
Avoid These Common Retention Mistakes
The most common mistake is adjusting too much at once. One large change makes it hard to know whether you improved the fit or went past the sweet spot. Quarter-turn adjustments are slower, but they are far more reliable.
Another mistake is tightening only one screw in a paired retention area. Uneven tension can distort the holster body, create an uneven draw, and put pressure in the wrong place. Unless the manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise, make matching adjustments on both sides.
Avoid adding random washers, adhesives, or thread compounds without understanding how they interact with the holster hardware. If screws repeatedly loosen during normal use, inspect the hardware and consult the holster manufacturer’s guidance. A small amount of the appropriate removable threadlocker may be recommended for some systems, but permanent threadlocker can turn a simple adjustment into a headache.

The best retention setting is the one that keeps your carry secure without getting in the way of a smooth, responsible draw.
